Smoking 4: The windpipe

The wall of the windpipe is made up of mucous cells and ciliated cells. Dirt that enters the windpipe may get stuck on the mucus.

The ciliated cells are covered by small hair-like filaments called cilia which are in continuous motion. They push the mucus with the dirt up towards the throat, where it is swallowed or coughed up.
