Smoking 9: Inflamed air sacs

It has now become easier for the cigarette tar and the dirt from the air to penetrate into the air sacs (alveoli) of the lungs. These may become inflamed.

White blood cells are released from the blood into the air sacs to help fight the inflammation and take away the impurities. The air sacs become weakened by this chronic inflammation.
