Injecting 1: Injecting heroine

Before heroin can be injected, it must be dissolved in a liquid. Normally this is sterile (boiled) water which has been slightly acidified, usually with ascorbic or citric acid.

The acidity improves the solubility of the heroin. This is important. If the drug is not completely dissolved, small chunks of heroin could be injected that could eventually block a blood vessel and trigger a heart attack or stroke.
