Intestine – portal vein – liver

The blood has meanwhile delivered its oxygen to the intestinal cells and has absorbed carbon dioxide from them. The MDMA molecules have also been absorbed into the bloodstream.

The blood flows into increasingly large veins, which merge to form the portal vein. The portal vein connects the small intestine to the liver.
