The serotonergic system

This increased activity in the serotonergic system produces a stronger feeling of bonding with other people. Some users describe this as the removal of a shell around them.

However, the overactive serotonergic system eventually exhausts its supply of the neurotransmitter serotonin. After an ecstasy trip, users may feel depressed.

Heavy, chronic use of ecstasy is also associated with memory impairment and with psychiatric disorders such as depression, anxiety, panic attacks and psychoses.

The serotonergic system also helps to regulate body temperature.
