Blood reaches the liver

The blood containing the alcohol molecules arrives in the liver. Here the portal vein branches out into increasingly smaller blood vessels.

The hepatic artery delivers oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the liver, since the blood in the portal vein has already delivered its oxygen to the intestines.

Later, when alcohol molecules have spread throughout the body, they will also reach the liver via the hepatic artery.
