Eating 6: The small intestine

The intestinal villi, the millions of hairlike projections that line the inside of the intestinal wall, greatly increase the surface area of the intestine. They enable the food to be absorbed into the bloodstream more efficiently.

The THC from the spacecake can easily penetrate the layer of cells that lines the outsides of the villi. Under that cell membrane is a network of tiny capillaries. The THC molecules enter these capillaries and are carried away by the blood that flows through them.

The THC is absorbed very easily, just as when cannabis is smoked. If spacecake is eaten on an empty stomach, the peak THC concentration in the blood is reached after about 30 to 45 minutes.
