Drugs, blood circulation and the organs of the body

Every drug is taken in its own way. Alcohol is drunk, tobacco is smoked, cocaine is snorted and heroin is inhaled or injected.

All these ‘modes of ingestion’ or ‘routes of administration’ have at least one thing in common: the drugs get into the bloodstream. The blood transports the drugs throughout the body. Sooner or later, they arrive in the brain.

This animated website explains which routes the drugs take through the body and which organs they pass through. We focus on how the body’s organs function under normal conditions and how they function under the influence of drugs.
