Smoking 8: The brain

Part of the blood containing the cocaine molecules that flow through the aorta arrive in the brain and is distributed through the branches of the blood vessels.

When you take cocaine by smoking or chasing, you experience the effects 7 to 10 seconds later. After smoking, all the cocaine molecules arrive in the brain at approximately the same time. This gives a sudden, intense effect called a ‘rush’ or ‘buzz’. The feeling persists less than 5 minutes. The rush is followed by a ‘crash’, a low, desperate feeling that may make you crave a new high.
