Cocaine

The routes of cocaine through the body

Cocaine, also known as ‘coke’, is extracted from the leaves of the coca plant. There are two types of cocaine: powder cocaine and freebase cocaine. Powder cocaine is a salt that is easily soluble in water. It is usually snorted. It cannot be smoked, because the active ingredient decomposes when heated.

Before cocaine can be smoked, it must be made heat-stable by boiling it with baking soda or ammonia. It is then called freebase coke or crack. Powder cocaine is the most commonly used form. Freebase coke or crack is often taken by heroin users.
